This concept of the Renaissance has been much discussed, as has Burckhardt's cultural pessimism. ![]() This 19th-century survey of the Renaissance propounds the view that it was at this time that man became aware of himself as a spiritual individual. A fascinating description of an era of cultural transition, this nineteenth-century masterpiece was to become the most influential interpretation of the Italian Renaissance, and anticipated ideas such as Nietzsche's concept of the 'Ubermensch' in its portrayal of an age of genius. ![]() ![]() In this landmark work he depicts the Italian city-states of Florence, Venice and Rome as providing the seeds of a new form of society, and traces the rise of the creative individual, from Dante to Michelangelo. For nineteenth-century Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt, the Italian Renaissance was nothing less than the beginning of the modern world - a world in which flourishing individualism and the competition for fame radically transformed science, the arts, and politics. ![]()

Posted by Christian Herring on 31st Mar 2023 Posted by Debra Mehaffey on 19th Apr 2023 5 I have just started reading this book.He not only lays out the doctrines we affirm, but brings forth common objections (many of which we might still hear today) and answers them according to scholastic argumentation and scriptural evidence. ![]() Ursinus lays out many doctrines of the Reformed faith with stunning. I find myself referencing it often even since reading it all the way through several years ago. It can be heady at times, but its value cannot be overstated. I have a bias toward Scottish theology, but Ursinus' Commentary is the most comprehensive summary of historic reformed doctrine in a systematic format that I have ever read. If I had to get rid of all of my books save one, this is the one I would keep. It might be a bit of hyperbole, but to me it' s a truly historic moment that this work is generally available once again. ![]() It' s no surprise that it went out of stock so quickly. ![]() This new print at the current price is an absolute steal.
